Everything's Coming Up Roses

posted Sunday, 9 November 2008

And it's not just because Bush is bye bye...

Where California tourism is concerned, Sacramento is overshadowed by its more famous cousins, Los Angeles and San Francisco. So when I found myself heading there for a week-long business trip, my expectations of the capital city were low.

I was pleasantly surprised to find, in the midst of downtown Sacramento, a spectacular rose garden, with hundreds of varieties in colorful bloom. The International World Peace Rose Garden is next to the State Capitol building, and just a short walk from the office where I was working. The flowers were exquisite -- a flower photographer's dream!  I always enjoy comparing the blooms to their sometimes-whimsical variety names.

Here, a sampling of the rainbow of colors, along with the variety names.  I think my favorite is Playgirl. What's yours?

Only you could brighten my day of New England chill and having to wait another 6 months or more to see roses blooming in the gardens. The gorgeous blooms in November makes me want to head to Sacramento tomorrow. I like the name Pillowfight and Marmalade Sky just for the imagery...but I couldn't one favorite bloom...they're all magical. Sharon

Those are breathtaking! It's really fun to have the names to compare with the blooms. Pillowfight and Betty Boop cracked me up!

Hi Basia,

All flowers look beautiful. The names of some of them like Queen Margarethe, Scentimental, Marmalade Sky, Glad Tidings, Impatient, New Day, Carefree Wonder made me reminisce on all those happy, fun filled times for me who as a child tagged along with my mom for buying flowers to offer to the deity for some ritual or other in Chennai's biggest flower bazaars.

Oh! I think I have "quoted" most of the flowers that you have put up there. :)

Regards, Aparna

Could-you-could, in your spare time, develop the virtual scents for each of these blooms! Thank you for putting it on your excel sheet of Things to Do!!

Shannon: I need to see (and photograph) your garden someday...

Sharon: Those two names made me chuckle too

Sheila: I always wonder who thinks up the names - I guess it must be the person who created the variety?

Aparna: Aah yes. I miss the flowers of Chennai (and India in general)

Sandhya: You're welcome!

DonnaK: Yellow roses have always been one of my favorites too.

sister M: LOL! I haven't heard "could-you-could" in ages! Wouldn't it be cool to be able to do that. I think there were some groups already working on generating virtual scents, but it seems they haven't gotten very far. I thought "Queen Margarethe" would be your fave?

The Veterans Rose is my favorite for today. I love the roses that are yet to bloom - all colors!

Hi Basia - It was so nice to open your blog this morning and see these beautiful roses! They are all so lovely. Especially since it is so cold and grey in Rochester, the colorful roses were a treat.
